Key to Wisconsin Hydrophyllum

    • 1a.Upper cauline leaves palmately-lobed, the lower leaves sometimes pinnately-compound or lobed; calyx with a reflexed appendage in each sinus; corolla broadly campanul H. appendiculatum

    • 1b.Cauline leaves all pinnately-compound or very deeply lobed; calyx without appendages in the sinuses; corollas narrowly campanulate H. virginianum

The newly-emerged leaves of both our species are heavily mottled with pale green or white splotches, giving the leaves a “water-covered” look, hence the genus and common names.
