Etymology: Iodanthus: from iodes for "violet-colored" and anthos for "flower"
Plants: erect, perennial, to 3' tall forb, unbranched below the inflorescence, mostly smooth
Leaves: toothed; lower leaves usually pinnately-divided towards the base, the lobes often appearing to clasp the stem
Flowers: purple to white, 4-parted; inflorescence a long cluster of stalked flowers; blooms May-June
Fruits: pod, long, thin, widely spaced
Habitat: moist to wet; woods; in alluvial soil
Conservation Status: Special Concern
