Etymology: Agalinis: "remarkable flax" in botanical Latin.
Plants: erect, annual, 8"-24" tall forb, dark green, blackish when dry, branches erect; stems smooth; partially parasitic
Leaves: narrow, linear, entire, very rough on the top, main leaves opposite, branch leaves sometimes alternate
Flowers: purple to pink, 5-parted, 3/4"-1" long, upper lobes only slightly flaring, 4 stamens with the lower ones longer, sepal lobes hairy inside and at the edges; inflorescence a loose cluster of long-stalked flowers from the upper leaf axils; blooms Aug.-Sept.
Fruits: elliptical, up to 1/3" long capsule with dark seeds
Habitat: dry; prairies
