Etymology: Cypripedium: incorrect Latinization of ancient Greek words meaning "Venus's shoe"

Flowers: 6-parted; pouch 3/4"- 1 1/8" long, yellow, often with purple veins; sepals usually twisted, green-yellow to purple-brown; inflorescence 1 or 2 flowers; blooms May-June
Habitat: wet to moist; conifer swamps, fens
