The limits of this genus are still controversial and not fully resolved. Some regional manuals have included both Acinos and Calamintha in Clinopodium, a trend not followed here. Recent studies using molecular data (Bräuchler et al., 2010; Drew and Sytsma, 2012) have shown that Clinopodium is paraphyletic, with numerous distinctive New World genera being embedded within it. Since the generic limits in the Mentheae need further study, it seems best to recognize the segregate genera until a consensus is reached.
