Etymology: Xyris: from a Greek name of a plant with 2-edged leaves, from xyron for "razor"
Plants: erect, perennial, up to 4' tall forb
Leaves: basal, mostly linear, 4"-40", smooth
Flowers: yellow, 3-parted; inflorescence a many-flowered, cone-like spike which matures to more than 1/3"; blooms May-July
Habitat: wet; in acid soil, often in bogs
Conservation Status: Native
