Etymology: Verbena: ancient Latin name of the common European vervain
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-28" tall forb, slender, with short hairs; stems square
Leaves: opposite, linear to oblong, toothed, short-stalked to stalklessleaf drawing
Flowers: purple, 5-parted, 1/8"-1/4" wide, tube with a few hairs in the throat and slightly longer than the lobes; inflorescence solitary, slender, dense spikes at the ends of the stems and branches; blooms June-Aug.
Fruits: 4 linear, separating nutlets
Habitat: dry; woods, fields, roadsides
