Etymology: Triphora: Greek for "bearing 3 flowers"
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-12" tall forb; stems usually purple
Leaves: several, alternate, stalkless, oval
Flowers: pink to white, 6-parted, 1/2"-3/4" long, nodding at first, lip 3-lobed with 3 green ridges; inflorescence a few flowers from the axils of the leaves; blooms Aug.-Sept.
Habitat: moderate moisture to moist; usually in sugar maple forests; in rich soil, often on rotten logs
