Etymology: Stachys: from the Greek stachus for "ear of grain" or "a spike," in reference to the spike-like form of the flowers
Plants: erect, perennial, to 40" tall, aromatic forb, not hairy; stems square, usually unbranched
Leaves: opposite, thin, oblong with a pointed tip, toothed, stalked
Flowers: pink, 5-parted, 3/8"-2/3" long,
; inflorescence separated whorls of stalkless flowers from the upper leaf axils; blooms June-Aug.
Fruits: 1-seeded nutlet
Habitat: shade; moist
