Oak barrens, dry prairies, fields, pine barrens, sandy riverbanks and river terraces, rock outcrops, cliffs, oak openings, oak-pine woods, sand blows, sandbars, beaches, Lake Michigan dunes, cedar glades, gravel ridges and hills, roadsides and railroads, quarries, gravel pits, powerline rights-of-way, vacant lots, sandy waste areas.
This is a weedy species that favors disturbed habitats. Shinners (1941) posited that native populations were uncommon and that many plants collected in his time invaded from elsewhere. Found mainly in sandy areas associated with major rivers, as well as along Lake Michigan.
