Sedge meadows, river floodplains, wet prairies, sandbars, shores, marshes, wet fields, river ledges, ditches, along roadsides and railroads; rarely in floodplain forests.
This is a robust grass with very distinctive inflorescences. It is found throughout the Central Sands and into the southeast. It also occurs up the Mississippi River, in the Northwest Sands, and around Green Bay. If included in Sporobolus, it would be called Sporobolus michauxianus (Hitchc.) P.M. Peterson & Saarela.
