Etymology: Solidago: from Latin solido, meaning "to make whole or heal" and a reference to the supposed, medicinal qualities of these plants
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-40" tall, mostly smooth and usually unbranched forb
Leaves: largest leaves toward the bottom, usually toothed, tapering to the stalk, upper becoming smaller and stalkless
Flowers: head with 7-8 yellow rays; inflorescence a long, narrow, spike-like cluster at the end of the stem with small, separated clusters of heads; blooms July-Oct.
Fruits: dry seed with short hairs
Habitat: moderate moisture to dry; cliffs, inland sands; in sandy, rocky soil
Conservation Status: Special Concern
