Etymology: Solidago: from Latin solido, meaning "to make whole or heal" and a reference to the supposed, medicinal qualities of these plants
Plants: erect, perennial, 1 1/2'- 3 1/2' tall forb; mostly smooth, thick stems
Leaves: narrowly lance-like, smooth, with no teeth, often folded along the midrib, stalked, upper leaves becoming stalkless to sheathing but not much smaller
Flowers: head with 7-9 yellow rays; inflorescence a crowded, flat-topped, branched cluster often with up to 100 heads; blooms Aug.-Oct.
Fruits: mostly smooth, dry seed on fluffy pappus
Habitat: wet; prairies, meadows, swamps; in limy soil
Conservation Status: Native
