Etymology: Ruellia: For Jean de la Ruelle (1474-1537), early French herbalist
Plants: erect, perennial, 3"-24" tall forb; 4-angled, finely hairy stems
Leaves: opposite, mostly stalkless, toothless, with long hairs
Flowers: pink to purple, 5-parted, 1 1/4"-2 3/4" long, funnel-shaped; solitary, stalkless, growing from the leaf axils; blooms June-Aug.
Fruits: smooth capsule
Habitat: dry to moderate moisture; prairies, woods; in sandy, loamy soil
