Leaves: elliptic to oblong in outline, base blunt to slightly pointed; edges with 5-7 lobes and 10-30 sharp points, lowest 2 lobes somewhat recurved
Flowers: brown to reddish brown, terminal, oval buds; blooms in spring
Fruits: acorns biennial; thin, saucer-shaped cup covering 1/4 of the nut; round to oval nut often with obvious stripes
Habitat: moist to wet; bottomlands, poorly drained upland clay soils
