Etymology: Quercus: Latin for oak
Plants: perennial, deciduous tree to 98' tall, on drier sites sometimes merely a large shrub; gray, thin, flaky to papery bark
Leaves: usually obovate but sometimes lance-like to rounded lance-like in outline, leathery, base blunt to slightly pointed, edges ruffled, toothed to shallowly lobed; underside smooth or light green, upper side dark shiny green
Flowers: brown to red-brown, roundish buds; flowers late winter into spring
Fruits: 1-2 acorns with or without stalks, semi-circular or shallow cup covering 1/4-1/2 of the nut; light brown, oblong to oval nut
Habitat: mixed woodlands and thickets, often on N-facing slopes; in limestone and calcareous soils
