Etymology: Quercus: Latin for oak
Plants: perennial, deciduous tree to 80'; scaly, light grey bark
Leaves: narrowly elliptic to obovate in outline, base narrowly wedge shaped to triangular with a pointed end; edge lobes 1/3-7/8 deep, often rounded tips; upper side light gray-green, smooth.
Flowers: oval, dark reddish brown buds; blooms in spring
Fruits: 1-3 acorns on very short stalks, semi-circular cup covers 1/4" of the nut; nut light brown, oval to oblong
Habitat: Moist to dry; deciduous woods, savannas, barrens; usually on deep, well-drained soil
Hazardous: Careful, this plant is hazardous!
Conservation Status: Native
