Plants: perennial, submersed aquatic; stems to 7' long; branched rhizomes
Leaves: alternate, entire, with prominent midvein; submersed and floating narrow, lance-like, on long stem; stipules free of leaf axils, disintegrate
Flowers: green-brown, small; inflorescence dense cylindrical spike, above water
Fruits: oval, dry seed with a lumpy dorsal ridge and a short beak
Habitat: usually flowing water >40" deep
