Common on moist shaded cliffs, ridges, and outcrops of sandstone, quartzite, limestone, and igneous rocks, sometimes on tree trunks and rotting logs. Leaves evergreen, firm, leathery, and deeply pinnately lobed, on shallow long creeping black rhizomes. The tetraploid race of this species is an allopolyploid derived from hybridization of P. appalachianum and P. sibiricum.
