Dry to mesic prairies and savannas, rock outcrops, cliffs and bluffs, lakeshores and beaches, clay banks, lawns, sandspits, quarries, along roadsides and railroads, fields, rock flats along rivers, open dry ground, gravel pits, dunes, bedrock beaches, meadows, gravel areas, dumps, sandblows and in dry forests along logging roads or trails.
Despite the common name, this species is native to Europe and was first collected in Wisconsin in 1860. Canada bluegrass is thoroughly naturalized and is often found in high-quality habitats; it seems to have a propensity for invading high bluff prairies and cliff communities. Like P. pratensis, this is a rhizomatous species, less tufted than the former and with a smaller, more contracted inflorescence.
