Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-12" tall forb; stems usually with no bracts
Leaves: 1, basal, clasping, oval to oblong, 2"-5" long with blunt tips
Flowers: green to white, 6-parted, 1/4"-1/2" long, lips not parted or fringed, side petals dilated below the middle; inflorescence a 1 1/8"-4" spike-like cluster with a few almost stalkless flowers; blooms June-Aug.
Habitat: moist; conifer swamps usually of cedar
