Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 12"-40" tall forb, stout
Leaves: mostly lance-like to oblong, occurring only along the stem
Flowers: green to white, 6-parted, 1/4"- 1/2" long, seemingly stalkless; lips not parted or fringed, blunt, wider toward the base; petals pointing forward; inflorescence a 2 1/3"-8" dense, many-flowered spike; blooms June-Aug.
Habitat: wet; bogs, woods, meadows, riversides
