Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 8"-16" tall forb; single stem usually with no bracts; fleshy roots
Leaves: 2, large, basal, widely elliptical, lying flat on the ground or slightly creased
Flowers: greenish to yellow, 6-parted, 3/4" long, stalkless, upward-curving lips not parted or fringed; inflorescence an open spike; blooms June-July
Habitat: moderate moisture to moist; forests, woods; in rich soil
