Etymology: Platanthera: from the Greek for "flat" and "flower," hence "wide or flat anthered"
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-16" tall forb
Leaves: one large leaf near or just below middle of the stem and several much smaller, upper leaves
Flowers: white to yellowish, 6-parted, 1/8"-1/3" wide, twisting along one side of its stalk, spur on the side, lips not parted or fringed but with 3 shallow lobes on the tip; inflorescence 3/4"- 2 1/3" loosely-open, spike-like cluster (raceme) with 5-15 flowers; blooms July-Aug.
Habitat: bogs, often in wet ditches; in acidic soil
