Common in shade in northern forests under hemlock, balsam fir, white cedar, yellow birch, etc. usually on acidic wet soils, less often on banks and in rock crevices. This species is an apogamous triploid of unknown origin, sometimes hybridizing with P. hexagonoptera, producing an apogamous tetraploid that has the lowest pinnae wider in the middle than P. connectilis but not as wide as typical P. hexagonoptera.
