Etymology: Parnassia: named for Mt. Parnassus of Greece, of uncertain application
Plants: erect, perennial, 8"-16" tall forb
Leaves: basal leaves stiff, leathery, with blades longer than wide and the bases rounded to slightly heart-shaped
; a smaller, non-clasping leaf usually on the lower half of the stem
Flowers: white, 5-parted, 3/4"-1 1/2" wide, petals green-striped; solitary on a long stalk from base of the plant; blooms Aug.-Oct.
Habitat: wet; bogs, meadows, shores; in limy soil
Conservation Status: Native
