Etymology: Orthilia: Greek for "straight spiral," referring to a one-sided floral arrangement
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-8" tall forb
Leaves: elliptical to roundish, often in separated clusters
Flowers: white to greenish, 5-parted, stalked, petals 1/3" long, style protruding with age; inflorescence a crowded cluster of flowers along only one side of the long stalk; blooms June-July
Fruits: capsule opening from the bottom upward
Habitat: moist to moderate moisture; forests, bogs
Conservation Status: Native
