Swamps, marshes, bogs, streambanks, wet woods, and wet meadows. They usually grow in low frost pockets and are among the first plants to be damaged by early frost, hence the name sensitive fern. Fossils that appear in the Paleocene about 90 million years ago are essentially identical to the living spacies.
