Etymology: Myriophyllum: from Greek myrios, "numberless," and phyllon, "leaf," alluding to the many divisions of the submerged leaves of these aquatic plants
Plants: perennial, submersed aquatic; stems with a few branches, light colored, winter bud's stems U-shaped at the base; from rhizomes
Leaves: 4 -5 leaves per whorl, short-stalked; finely, pinnately-divided into 5-12 pairs of thread-like leaflets, the lower ones longer than the upper ones
Flowers: red, 4-parted, winter buds cylindrical; inflorescence a spike held above the water with whorled flowers from axils of short, mostly smooth-edged bracts
Fruits: 4 parted with mostly a smooth surface
Habitat: lakes, shallow to more than 16' deep, fairly clear water; in soft sediment soil
Conservation Status: Native
