Etymology: Muhlenbergia: after Gotthilf Heinrich E. Muhlenberg (1753-1815). Born in Trappe, Pennsylvania, educated in Halle, Germany, after returning to US., devoted his leisure hours to the study of the natural sciences, botany in particular.

Dry to mesic prairies, oak savannas, bracken grasslands, blufftops, rock outcrops, dry cliffs, open dry woods of oak-hickory and oak-red cedar, on sandbars, in open dry areas, along roadsides and railroads. Primarily found in the southern and western halves of the state, somewhat allopatric from the closely related M. glomerata.
