Etymology: Muhlenbergia: after Gotthilf Heinrich E. Muhlenberg (1753-1815). Born in Trappe, Pennsylvania, educated in Halle, Germany, after returning to US., devoted his leisure hours to the study of the natural sciences, botany in particular.

Upland hardwood forests, coniferous woods, and floodplain forests; marshes, wet meadows, lakeshores, along streams, cliffs, dune swales and cobble shores, mesic prairies, open swamps, sedge meadows, fens, rock outcrops and cliffs, fields, dumps, along roadsides and railroads. This is our most widespread and variable member of the genus, found across the entire state.
