Etymology: Mitella: Greek mitra, diminutive meaning of "little caps" probably for the shape of the seed capsule or flower
Plants: erect, perennial, 6"-12" tall forb
Leaves: basal leaves rounded to kidney-shaped with a heart-shaped base; 0 to 1 oval, stalkless leaf on the stem
Flowers: yellowish, reddish to green, 5-parted, 1/4"-1/3" wide, fringed petals resemble a snowflake; inflorescence a 1"-4" tall cluster (raceme) of stalked flowers; blooms May-June
Habitat: wet; forests, bogs, often in moss
