Mesic to wet woods, swamps, ravines, wet meadows, on alluvial or mucky soils; often planted in shade gardens, spreading rapidly by long rhizomes. The dark brown fertile shoots persisting through winter are quite conspicuous. Young fiddleheads are often eaten in spring.
