Etymology: Malaxis: from the Greek for "soft" from the texture of the leaves
Plants: erect, perennial, 4"-12" tall forb; stems naked between leaves and inflorescence
Leaves: 1 clasping leaf slightly above the stem base
Flowers: greenish, 6-parted, less than 1/8" wide, held upside-down; lip not bearded, deeply split at the tip; inflorescence a cluster (raceme) that elongates from a flat ball to a 1/4"-5" tall round-topped cylinder of stalked flowers; blooms July-Aug.
Habitat: wet to damp; bogs, forests, clearings
