Common in dry to mesic coniferous, mixed, or deciduous woods, often forming large clones; also in old fields, shrub thickets, and cedar swamps. This species is most easily recognized by the long soft single hair-like bristle at the end of each leaf, and by the two or more strobili at the top of the long peduncle.
