Etymology: Lobelia: after Matthias de l'Obel (1538-1616), a Flemish botanist; also written as Matthias von Lobel
Plants: erect, annual, 1'-3' tall forb, usually branched, finely hairy
Leaves: mostly stalkless, broad, oblong
Flowers: white to blue, 5-parted, 1/4" long, irregulaly shaped, top lip 2-parted, lower lip 3-parted; inflorescence a 4"-16" spike-like cluster (raceme) of stalked flowers from the ends of the branches; blooms July-Oct.
Fruits: inflated
Habitat: sun to partial sun; disturbed sites, woods, forests

Deciduous forests (mostly mesic to dry-mesic, sometimes dry, e.g., red pine or aspen stands), usually along edges, openings, logging roads, and trails or where cut-over, also pastures, fields, wet meadows, riverbanks, roadsides, muddy ditches, and landfill, rarely in overgrown gardens; usually moist, often disturbed ground, from full sun to deep shade.
