Etymology: Linum: from the old Greek name for flax, linon, used by Theophrastus

Leaves: small and narrow, mostly alternate with dark glands at the base
Flowers: yellow, 5-parted, 1/3"-3/4" wide; inflorescence a loose, branched cluster (panicle) of stalked flowers; blooms June-July
Habitat: dry; upland woods, prairies, inland sands
