Etymology: Lespedeza: after Cespedez, Spanish governor of east Flordia in late 18th century
Plants: slender, erect perennial, 2'-4' tall forb with dense, fine hairs; stems usually unbranched or with a few branches toward the top
Leaves: 3-parted, mostly oval, pointing upward on very short stalk
Flowers: cream with a pinkish throat, 5-parted, 3/8" long; inflorescence a rounded, dense cluster (head) of crowded, stalkless flowers turning dark brown when mature; blooms July-Sept.
Habitat: full to partial sun; dry to moderate moisture; prairies, woods; in sandy, loamy, gravelly soil
