Etymology: Ilex: ancient Latin name of the Holly Oak, rather than Holly
Plants: erect, perennial, 10' tall shrub, branched
Leaves: with short, sharp point, edges mostly entire, bases rounded, stalks often reddish
Flowers: yellowish, 7 or more-parted, petals separate, narrow; blooms April-June
Fruits: red/yellow berry, with thick nutlet
Habitat: moist to wet
