Common in rich soils in moist coniferous and coniferous-deciduous forests throughout northern Wisconsin. Occasionally on bedrock exposures and large boulders. Usually in cool microhabitats south of the Tension Zone. In the Driftless Area it tends to grow on sandstone outcrops with H. porophila, producing the hybrid H. x barteleyi (Cusick) Kartesz & Gandhi, Bartley'fs fir-moss.
