Etymology: Helianthus: derived from two Greek words helios, "sun," and anthos, "flower," in reference to the sunflower's supposed tendency to always turn toward the sun
Plants: erect, perennial, 2' - 6 1/2' tall forb with spreading hairs
Leaves: mostly all opposite along the stem, bases rounded to the short stalks; hairy below, rough above
Flowers: head 1 3/4"- 3 1/2" wide, 10-15 yellow rays, disks yellow; inflorescence with one to a few heads on thick stalks; blooms July-Oct.
Habitat: dry; woods, meadows
Conservation Status: Native
