Etymology: Hedeoma: from the Greek hedus, "sweet," and osme, "odor," an ancient name for a strongly aromatic mint
Plants: erect, annual, 1"-16" tall forb, slightly aromatic; stems square, usually unbranched or branched only at the base
Leaves: opposite, toothless, linear, finely hairy, stalkless
Flowers: pink, 5-parted, 1/8" long;
inflorescence of distinctly spaced whorls from the leaf axils; blooms May-Aug.
Fruits: 1-seeded nutlet
Habitat: dry; inland sands, barrens; in sandy soil
Conservation Status: Native
