Marshes, beaver meadows, along rivers, alder thickets, lakeshores and lake swales, bogs, wet fields, sedge meadows, streams, ponds, wet cliffs, river ledges, along roadsides and railroads, ditches, wet prairies, low trails and pools in upland woods, swampy woods of maple-birch-oak-basswood, white cedar, tamarack-black spruce, black ash, birch-tamarack-red maple, green ash. Like many common wetland plants, this species is found throughout the entire state.
