Barrens, Great Lakes dunes, dry prairies, sand spits, open woods of pine and oak, sandy, rocky areas, bracken grassland, rock outcrops and ledges, roadsides. This is a native species found scattered in the state in regions with sandy soil. It may be more common, but it is difficult to tell apart from F. rubra and F. trachyphylla, so collectors may ignore it, or specimens may be misidentified.
