Exposed sand and mud of riverbanks, streambeds, sloughs, river islands, gravel bars, shores of lakes and ponds, marshy areas, floodplain forests, low fields, and ditches. This is a delicate, creeping species that can form large mats on wet substrate exposed after water drawdowns. Widespread across the southern half of the state, most commonly found along the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. There are apparent gaps in its range along some of these waterways and more targeted collecting should be carried out to investigate if these are real.
