Fields, agricultural land, gardens, along railroads and roadsides, waste areas, lawns, pavement cracks, gravel pits and quarries, dumps, campgrounds, pine plantations; also in more natural settings such as on cliffs, in prairies, on beaches, riverbanks, and mudflats. Introduced from Europe and first collected in 1874. This species and E. minor have a disagreeable odor when fresh.
