Etymology: Epigaea: Greek epi for "upon" and ge for "the earth" referring to trailing growth
Plants: trailing/creeping, perennial, 1"-3" tall shrub; stems branching
Leaves: evergreen, leathery, alternate, oval to oblong with a rounded to heart-shaped base, stalk hairy and half as long as the leaf
Flowers: pink, 5-parted, 1/2" wide, funnel-shaped, fragrant, tube 1/3"-1/2" long with a very hairy throat, 2 oval bracts almost as long as the sepals; tube 1/3"-1/2" long with a very hairy throat; inflorescence a dense, short, terminal spike; blooms Mar.-May
Fruits: fleshy, round, berry-like, pulpy, white inside
Habitat: moist; bogs, forests; in sandy, rocky, acidic soil
