Etymology: Chaenorhinum: Greek for "open-nose," referring to open corolla-throat
Plants: erect, annual, 4"-12" tall forb, branched
Leaves: alternate, linear, undivided
Flowers: blue to purple, 5-parted, 1/4" long, very irregularly-shaped, slender spur at the base, 2 distinct lips with the lower one open at the throat and marked with yellow, 4 stamens; solitary, stalked flowers from the leaf axils; blooms June-Sept.
Fruits: roundish capsule
Habitat: waste areas, railroad ballast
Conservation Status: Introduced - naturalized
