Etymology: Cannabis: ancient Greek name, of obscure etymology
Plants: erect, annual, 8"-40" or more tall forb
Leaves: stalked, palmately-divided with 5-7 leaflets, hairy, toothed
Flowers: green, 5-parted; inflorescence 6" branched clusters both terminal and from the leaf axils, male flowers loosely arranged, female more compact and fewer; blooms June-Oct.
Fruits: dry seed
Habitat: disturbed sites

Conservation Status: Introduced - naturalized

Conservation Status: Introduced - naturalized
Roadsides, railroad corridors, farmyards, pastures and fields, waste areas, vacant lots, gardens, rock outcrops, open bluffs and cliffs, streambanks, borrow pits and old quarries, borders of woods. An Asian species cultivated for hundreds of years as a fiber crop and for medicinal and recreational use. Hemp was grown in Wisconsin during WWII and many of our collections are surely escaped progeny of those plants.
