Plants: erect, perennial, 16"-40" tall, roughly hairy forb; roots thicker near the middle and tapering toward the ends
Leaves: mostly triangular with a wide base, shallowly-lobed, long-stalked
Flowers: red with a white center, 5-parted, 1 1/4"-2 1/2" wide, petals square at the tips; inflorescence of several, crowded flowers on a short stalk from the leaf axils; blooms June-Aug.
Habitat: full sun; dry; prairies, woods, inland sands; in sandy soil
